NATURAL PHENOMENON OR GENETIC MUTATION?
There are several reasons someone from a “brown eyes” culture might have blue eyes. Here are a couple:
1. Waardenburg Syndrome
This condition can be the diagnosis if you have two blue eyes or irises of different colors. If one is brown and another one is blue, then it’s a possibility that you suffer from Waardenburg Syndrome. This iris pigmentary abnormality is just one of the many signs of Waardenburg Syndrome. Usually this condition can come with other deformities though. To read more about it visit: Wiki on Waardenburg Syndrome
2. Ocular Albinism
Ocular albinism in an inherited condition in which the eyes lack melanin pigment, while the skin and hair show normal or near-normal coloration. Read More Here
At one time, all humans had brown eyes on the planet. Blue eyes actually came about as a mutation. Anyone with blue eyes can be traced back to one common ancestor.
Professor Eiberg from the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine says, “But a genetic mutation affecting the OCA2 gene in our chromosomes resulted in the creation of a “switch”, which literally “turned off” the ability to produce brown eyes”. The OCA2 gene codes for the so-called P protein, which is involved in the production of melanin, the pigment that gives colour to our hair, eyes and skin. The “switch”, which is located in the gene adjacent to OCA2 does not, however, turn off the gene entirely, but rather limits its action to reducing the production of melanin in the iris – effectively “diluting” brown eyes to blue. ” Read entire article here.
Here are some pictures of people of different ethnicities with blue eyes.
These pictures have been blogged and reblogged so many times, it’s hard to tell where they originally came from. If you have more information on the origins of any of these people, please leave it in the comment section below.
